What Are Biodegradable Seals?

Mega Fortris stands at the forefront of the industry’s sustainability initiatives.

Taking one step further in the Journey of Sustainability and building upon our existing initiative of incorporating 30% recycled content into our polypropylene seals, we’re taking a giant leap forward by introducing bio-additives into our entire range of products that include plastic content. With this evolutionary approach, it ensures that our products not only provide protection but also actively contribute to environmental sustainability.

To provide eco-conscious solutions on a wide array of applications, all Mega Fortris’ security seal product lines with plastic content will include the BioSphere bio-additive from 13 May 2024, comprehensively securing the global supply chain while reducing our footprint.

So, what exactly are these bio-additives, and how do they work their magic? Essentially, the bio-additives serve as catalysts for anaerobic microbes, enabling them to break down plastics into byproducts such as low-weight non-toxic compounds, and water. By leveraging chemical mechanisms to disrupt the strong bonds inherent in plastic polymers, these additives facilitate the biodegradation process, paving the way for a circular economy where waste is minimized, and resources are conserved. The byproducts of degradation are both non-toxic to the environment and compatible in recycling. This next step is a significant improvement in jointly sustaining the supply chain and the environment.

Of course, the journey to sustainability isn’t without its challenges. Nevertheless, every step toward responsible waste management brings us closer to our ultimate goal: a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.

With the introduction of security seals with bio-additives, Mega Fortris reaffirms its position as a pioneer in the realm of sustainable business practices. As we continue to push the boundaries of innovation, we invite you to join us on this transformative journey toward a world where sustainability isn’t just a dream — it’s a reality we proudly embrace.

Mega Fortris has incorporated biodegradable additives into our full range of Polypropylene (PP) and nylon plastic security seals. Products that are made with BioSphere plastic additive comply with ISO 14021:2016 “Environmental labels and declarations” under the definition of “Biodegradable”. Plastic products that are made with this additive biodegrade in accordance with the following testing methods:

  • ASTM D5511 and ISO DIS 15986
  • ASTM D5526
  • ASTM D5338
  • In Compliance with EU Directive 94/62/EC | Directive 89/109/EEC | Directive 2002/72/EC

BIOSPHERE

Biosphere Plastic has designed a unique environmental solution. Their unique plastic additive, when placed into the base polymer such as PP, PE, PS, PET, and other major resin types, enhances the biodegradability of these polymers. BioSphere continues to R&D their technology making it enhance the biodegradation of plastic faster, more affordable and in different forms. When BioSphere first released its product in 2012, its additive was in solid-state form, since then BioSphere has developed a liquid and powder formulation and a compostable additive which is poised to pass the ASTM D6400 testing standard for compostable plastic in the United States.
